Coatings produced by Magnetron Sputtering are used in a variety of applications:

Architectural glass coatings

To improve thermal efficiency (insulation properties) and aesthetic appearance thin film coatings are applied to the architectural glass. The utilized low- emissivity coating systems are designed to reflect radiant infrared energy keeping it on the glass side where it originated from, while letting pass visible light. Windows with these coatings are more energy efficient as heat originating from indoors in winter is reflected back, while infrared heat radiation from the sun during summer is reflected keeping it cooler inside.

Micromechanical systems

Thermal barrier coatings

Thermal barrier coatings are applied to protect parts from severe temperatures and harsh chemical environments. Such coatings are typically ceramic composites based in Zirconium, Alumina and Titanium. Application examples include turbine blades in aircraft engines, high speed cutting tools in bad cooling conditions and mold works at high temperature.

Optical coatings

In order to modify the spectral characteristics (reflection, transmission and polarization) of the materials single or multiple layers of metallic and/or dielectric materials are applied. Such coatings reduce reflection and increase light transmission leading to improved brightness and contrast. Example applications Anti-reflective coatings, optical filters, binoculars and camera lenses.

Decorative Coatings

Wherever a high quality surface finish and a long time guarantee on the appearance is needed a decorative coating can be applied. Examples include sanitary and door hardware as well as watches and spectacle frames.

Tribological Coatings

Tribological coatings are applied wherever wear and friction need to be reduced between interacting surfaces in relative motion. Examples are automotive engines, where a coating leads to increased engine life, improved performance and fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions.

TCO coatings

Transparent conductive oxides (TCO) are used in manufacturing optoelectronic devices such as flat panel displays, touch screens and photovoltaics.

Hard coatings

Hard coatings are commonly used in the cutting tool industry increasing productivity whilst decreasing the costs of machining at the same time. Benefits of hard coatings for cutting tools are increased tool surface hardness leading to higher possible machining speeds and better surface finishing of the work piece. In addition tool is increased resulting in fewer tool costs, fewer tool changes and lower costs for machine downtime.
